Weidmüller and Thales project shortlisted for 2018 UK Rail Industry Award

 A recent project undertaken by Weidmüller and Thales has been shortlisted for the UK Rail Industry Awards in the Outstanding Projects worth over £20m category. The Four Lines Modernisation (4LM) Project for London Underground Limited, and the innovative way in which it has been handled, impressed the judges, securing Weidmüller and Thales a much-coveted place amongst the finalists. The black-tie award ceremony will take place at the Battersea Evolution in London on 22nd March, 2018.

 

Now in its fifth year, the UK Rail Industry Awards bring together the leaders and decision-makers running the rail industry for the sector’s biggest and most prestigious celebration. The event recognises the hard work and achievement from the dedicated organisations, teams and individuals working tirelessly to deliver an efficient and robust rail network, which continues to be one of the safest in Europe.

The 4LM project, which has provided Weidmüller and Thales with its route to the finals, is currently the largest railway signalling upgrade project in the world. It entails installing new signalling systems on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, which between them account for 40% of London Underground’s traffic. The main objectives of the project are to make the system safer and more reliable and to increase the number of trains per hour that can run on these four lines, providing a 33% expansion in peak passenger carrying capacity. The project involves five complex rail junctions, 113 stations and 119 trains.

For the 4LM project, Weidmüller supplied Thales with in excess of 3,000 enclosures. Based on standard products, these were customised to meet London Underground’s exacting requirements, an approach that provided an excellent technical solution along with competitive pricing and guaranteed product availability. An additional benefit was that Weidmüller was able to test and certify the customised enclosures in its own in-house test facility, thereby eliminating the delays associated with using an external test house.

London Underground passengers will begin to see the benefits of 4LM project at the end of 2019, when the new signalling systems on the Circle line will go live. The full benefits will become apparent in 2023 when the final stages of the project are completed. This is all thanks to the high reliability of Thales SelTrac signalling systems and the exceptional protection afforded to key elements of the new signalling installation by Weidmüller enclosures.

In addition to being amongst the finalists, Weidmuller is also showing its support for the rail sector by sponsoring the Design Innovation category of the awards.

Sensor Actuator and Data Cables & Connectors

Prefabricated and tested cables with plug-in connectors save time and simplify installation in difficult plant conditions. But standard products aren’t always the best solution. We offer a wide range of alternatives, including customised lengths, materials and cables assembled on one end from a batch size of one. In addition to traditional M12 circular connectors, its product range features the sizes M8 and M5 as well as data lines with different mating profiles. The prefabricated, standardised “plug-and-produce” solutions ensure efficient installation and reliable operation.

Circular connectors are the standard in both machinery and plant engineering and robotics. Given the decentralised and modular construction of these applications, prefabricated cables offer ideal suitability, allowing fast and error-free installation even in difficult plant conditions, far removed from an ergonomic, well organised workplace.

The robust M12 circular connectors have proven their value in this field for decades. For compact and weight-sensitive applications, particularly in robotics, M8 and M5 circular connectors are an attractive alternative. These are just as robust and effective as M12 solutions, only much smaller and lighter. The recent introduction of corresponding standards is a further argument in favour of opting for the smaller sizes. Specifically, standard IEC 61076-2-101, which previously covered all M5, M8 and M12 plug-in data connectors, has been divided into separate individual standards due to increasingly extensive information:

  • IEC 61076-2-101 for M12 plug-in connectors
  • IEC 61076-2-104 for M8 plug-in connectors
  • IEC 61076-2-105 for M5 plug-in connectors
  • IEC 61076-2-109 for M12 plug-in connectors used for data transmission
  • IEC 61076-2-111 for M12 plug-in connectors used for power transmission

Three paths towards the goal

To account for this broad spectrum of cables, we offer a product and service package with multiple customisation options that meets all requirements. First of all, there is the traditional “standardised product” variant, though “standardised” fails to adequately describe the wide assortment of products available.

You can choose from prefabricated cables made from PUR, PVC and LSZH in lengths of 1, 3, 5 and 10 m. Transparent labelling sleeves and a wide range of colours ensure a clearer overview during installation. The cables are available with M8, M12, M16, 7/8″ and RJ45 plug-in connectors in various sizes and codings, allowing installations for power, signals or data to be clearly separated. 360° shielding, vibration resistance and protection ranging from IP65 to IP69 guarantee fault-free operation. The prefabricated cables can be ordered directly via the online catalogue. Orders can be placed from a batch size of one.

Alternatively, users can also arrange to have customised variants produced, whether identical on both sides, with different plugs or with open cable ends. We offer specific solutions with demand-oriented cable lengths, plugs, markings or colours from a batch size of one. They can be constructed with ease using the online configurator.  Automatically produced technical documentation is also included in the service.

Finally, customised cables can also be compiled in direct contact with our specialists – the third ordering option. In this way, you can coordinate specific wiring arrangements, special packages and individual markings. Bundling different cables under a single order number is also possible for easy reordering. For a seamless logistics process and simple parts replacement, a scannable EAN can be assigned to the cable ex works, ensuring quick identification.

Weidmüller Screwty® – the technician’s extended hand

Once delivered, all that’s left is for the cable to be installed. To this end, technicians can call on Screwty®, an innovative tool for screwing and unscrewing circular connectors in confined spaces and difficult-to-reach areas. The highlight is its individually adjustable torque, allowing for optimal sealing. In addition, it means that machinery manufacturers can implement the quality management system requirements of DIN EN ISO 9001.

Weidmuller relays and solid-state relays

D-Series relay modules – Impressively long-lasting, high performance

Panel building requires long-lasting components. Panels are becoming more and more technologically advanced but they are only as reliable as the components selected within and it is imperative for the reliability of the panel that the switching components used offer the highest reliability.

Our D-SERIES industrial relay modules are an outstanding, high-performance relay module series with long service life for numerous industrial applications. They are designed especially for demanding industrial applications and are used in situations where combinations of relays must meet exacting requirements in an industrial environment, for example high voltage levels and load currents acting on the actuators, e.g. when activating motors, solenoid valves or brakes in machine construction. In addition to having a much longer service life, the D-SERIES relay modules are highly reliable, thus minimising maintenance and/or replacement costs.

The compact DRI relays incorporate robust, industry-compliant plug-in pins.  In an industrial environment, service work needs to be carried out quickly, simply and reliably. Increasingly compact cabinets and miniaturised components in confined spaces are becoming a challenge. If components need to be replaced, the bended relay pins often cause errors which are difficult to locate. As the handling of components in practice plays an increasingly important role, DRI relays have particularly robust plug-in pins for quick and safe mounting. The test button with final locking to detect manipulation can be actuated without tools. Easily visible LED illumination of the status indicator also allows clear determination of status. Both during installation of the cabinets and during subsequent servicing in mechanical and plant construction, DRI relays are the optimum coupling element for confined installation conditions.

The DRM Series relays and DIN rail bases are available in both 2 and 4 change over contact versions with options for LED indication and diode protection and the Din rail mounting bases will accept bare wire, insulated bootlace ferrule or insulated fork lugs. They are offered with a selection of both AC and DC coil voltages to match most industrial applications. The contacts which are made from heavy electroplated silver alloy 270 microns thick, plus the use of thickly plated silver on all contact surfaces, increases the electrical life of the relay adding to life expectancy and reliability. The attention to detail even extends to hardening the relay pins to provide reliable insertion every time.

Convenient operation is ensured across the D-series portfolio by an optional LED status display (AC red, DC green) and an optional test buttons (AC red, DC blue).  Furthermore, we equip our D-SERIES relay modules with a wealth of accessories: relay bases, markers and pluggable pre-wiring (e.g. LED or free-wheel diode) to improve flexibility in use. The wide range of coil voltages from 5 V DC to 380 V AC enables use with virtually any control voltage.

The range is further complemented with models suitable for use where high voltage levels and load currents act on the actuators, e.g. when activating motors, solenoid valves or brakes in machine construction.  Demands increase when large amounts of current are used. Numerous industrial applications use voltages between 110 V and 220 V to control actuators. With load currents greater than 100 mA, these high voltages cause wear-intensive arcing on the relay contacts. But this does not happen with DRH products from  the D-SERIES relay portfolio: contact series connection, in-built blowout magnets and low-wear contacts effectively prevent unwanted arcing and ensure a longer service life. The series connection of the contacts and the blowout magnet that quickly extinguishes arcs reduce contact burn-off at loads of up to 220 V DC/10 A.

DRL power relays (1 up to 4 CO) have good wear resistance with AC loads and high dielectric strength (2000 V). DRW power relays (2 CO or 3 CO) are suited to switching high load voltages. DRH DC relays (1 NO or 1 NC and 2 NO or 1 NO/1 NC) are used to switch high DC loads. DRR power relays (2 CO and 3 CO) are suitable as 8/11-pole relays with a switching capacity of 2500 VA.

The robustly configured and reliable relay modules of the D-SERIES operate in a wide ambient temperature range: DC from – 40 °C to + 60 °C and AC from – 40 °C to + 55 °C.

All D-SERIES relay modules are CE-conform and certified by the German TÜV. In addition, they have international cULus approval.

“WOW” RockStar® HDC – New Locking System

In order to meet the constantly growing market requirements, we have developed a completely new interlock system and thus creating more options for different customer applications. In addition to the high holding forces of the well-known stainless-steel locking system, we have been able to improve the shock and vibration resistance with the new locking system and now meet even the railway standard IEC 61373 Cat.2 (installation on the bogie) as well as the current standard for “Fire Protection in Rail Vehicles” DIN EN 45545-2.
